I'm just curious. What do you do when you see puppies for sale on the side of the road?
I think - what would HOT DP do. And then I do it :)
Actually - sadly, I have never done anything. There was a guy down the street from us selling puppies along the road - well - ok - he lived on the road and was selling them out of his house, but same idea. I just shook my head sadly everytime I drove by and hoped that his cute mutt puppies found homes where the owner was smart enough to spay and neuter them. I don't know that I would ever do anything. What could possibly be accomplished by stopping and chastising them? Maybe, the most I would ask if they said something to ME first was - ';I already adopted 3 mutts from my local shelter, I hope you consider spaying and neutering your dog so your puppies don't end up there.'; But that would be about it. If they didn't speak to me, there's no point walking up to them and harrassing them.
(Just like I would never walk up to a Yahooer and yell at them for accidentally or purposefully breeding their mutts/dogs - but wait they DO ask me first!!)What do you do when you see puppies for sale on the side of the road?
I often go into pet stores to let the staff know how ignorant they are.
Everytime I go in, I play with a puppy and ask all sorts of questions that, almost every time, get really wrong answers.
At this point, I am always tempted to steal the puppy.
Haven't done it yet, but it's only a matter of time.
I never see puppies for sale on the side of the road. If I did, I'd probably steal those as well.
EDIT: Haha, a thumbs down? Whatever for?
if it is a herding dog i go oooohhhh daddy look at the little puppies!
Years ago, when I was only 16. My boyfriend bought me a puppy that was for sale for $ 5.00 on the roadside
She was a lab/cocker mix. I had her for a long time, and she was probably the smartest, and one of the healthiest dogs I ever had.
O.K. This was about 35 yrs ago. There was no such thing as a BYB. I got a great dog for 5 bucks. If you don't like my answer than tough S**t
Keep on going.
Been angry and/or sad... knowing that this is yet another litter of puppies being irresponsibly placed to just repeat the same scenario and end up as bodies in some pile of neglected and thrown away dogs... by the millions and people keep doing it... no law against stupid and irresponsible, unfortunately...
When I was a child I used to see boxes of puppies for sale at flea markets and always walked away broken hearted. I was too young and ignorant so I didn't do anything. I haven't seen that in years. Could be the area I'm in.
Shake my head....likely an unexpected, unwanted pregnancy, which everyone knows can be prevented. I just hope they all get good homes.
EDIT: If I could, I take them all. At least then I'd know that they were getting the proper vet care, good food, warm beds, and lots of love. Unfortunately, I know that I can't save every needy animal I come across...reality sucks, doesn't it? All I can do is hope for them to find great homes.
just keep on driving unless they are mastiffs or danes then i stop and look
I will do nothing because I don't want to help any backyard breeders although the puppies have nothing to do with it.
I called the police. Here in my state it is illegal to do this. I saw a man set up shop in our local feed store parking lot on a Sunday afternoon and I stopped to see the pups. They were sick and very young I's say 6 weeks old. I called the police and lodged a complaint. They arrested him and turned the pups over to the local dog warden. Later I found ut they all had Parvo and some didn't make it. He was selling them for 75 dollars each and I have no idea how many he sold before I saw what he was doing. Made me sick!
If I ever came across something like this I would take the whole litter back to my house, give them the appropriate vet care and find them good loving homes! BYBs should be put to sleep instead of the thousands...no...MILLIONS of dogs they produce each year!
Edit: Three thumbs down? Wow...
cringe in fear for 1. where they came from(backyard puppy mills) 2. what may be wrong (see #1) 3. who may be buying said puppies to continue the trend
It depends on the kind of mood I was in. I would probably stop, and talk to whom ever was giving them away.....before I assumed they were some sort of backyard breeder.
The reason I say this is because I had a friend that worked for a local animal rescue group. She took responsibility of a litter of pit mix pups that were confiscated for being neglected. While she didn't try and sale them on the side of the road, she did have a hard time finding homes for them after they were rehabilitated.
Everyone has a different story folks. Why don't we take the time to listen before we jump to conclusions?!
i would take it, and if my parents said i couldnt keep it i would bring them to the animal shelter. 鈾モ櫏 -I luvv puppys!! ^_^
absolutely nothing we go right past them. chances r that if they r selling on the side of the road, then they r backyard breeders or puppymillers and u dont want to support either of them
The one time I have seen this, I called the police and turned the guy in. Unfortunately, they did not seize the pups, only told the guy to move on :(
nothing.
i have to stop and touch them and spoil them and since i already have 2dogs cry when i can`t take one home with me
kisses
take them. who ever would put their dogs out on the side of the road oviously doesnt want them so take it or put it in a shelter
I like to pull over and neuter the person who bred the dogs without a plan for the pups!
I've never seen this, but I've heard about it. I've advised others who have seen this sort of activity to contact the police -- peddling ';wares'; on public property without a permit is against the law.
I would never go near puppies in this situation. I would heed my own advice and contact authorities. Chances would be slim to nil that any of this person's dogs would be vaccinated and I'd be very concerned about spreading parvovirus and other diseases.
Drive on.
i have seen them at flea markets. most are at min age and i want to say something. i don't i look and shake my head in disappoval. the price is 10-50 bucks most of the time. no shots...grrrrr.
however my dogs came from nieghbor of a friend of mine who had a huge litter of 5 week old puppies with out shelter but a porch in -5 deg. at night. i went up to his house and asked if i could have ever last one of them. and he gave them to me! sadly one had already froze to death. I told him to get the female fixed. he must have casue there was no more litters.
