Another Question about the german shepherd puppy I found for sale....?

And yes I was considering adoption, filled out 3 adopt applications online and emailed caused i was asked to....all 3 said I am out of their adoption area...what gives????Another Question about the german shepherd puppy I found for sale....?
Has the hip testing been done on the parents? If you have the sire/dam's registered names and AKC numbers, you can look up their OFA (Hip) information here:

http://www.offa.org

If you can't find it, and the breeder won't offer proof of OFA/PennHip clearance, don't bother. Find a better breeder.

Only a moron would breed GSDs without doing hip clearances first.Another Question about the german shepherd puppy I found for sale....?
I think I would pass on this one. I also think if I was new in the area, I would ask my vet to help me. Vets always help people find pets. They also know the breeders that would be good and the ones to stay away from. They might even be able to help you get a free puppy if you are considering adoption. You also need to check your home owners insurance and find out what breeds you can have with your policy. Most home owners insurance companies won't cover a house if you own a german shepherd. Good luck.
$450 tells me they are likely BYBs. That doesn't mean the pups are bad but GSDs have a horrible problem with hip dysplasia. So if the parents haven't been checked out before breeding, you need to get a health guarantee against bad hips. Then get the puppy checked by a Penn Hip certified vet as soon as it's old enough. You can also look up the sire and dam on the OFA web site to see if they are certified. www.offa.org but you need their AKC #s not just he DNA #.

As to rescue -- out of their adoption area is not unusual. They like to have the dogs close enough to check on or get back easily if the new home doesn't work out.

Good luck. All puppies deserve a good home -- regardless of the source. And before I get deleted -- these pups are already here so screaming about spay/neuter or supporting puppy mills does not apply.

Added: Dobiz -- Petco and Petsmart host adoption days in support of local shelters. They do NOT sell puppies or kittens from puppy mills or any other place.
I'm not sure where you live but that does sound rather cheap for a German Shepherd from a reputable breeder. I wouldn't pursue it.

Have you tried looking for one in LOCAL animal shelters? I always see at least one purebred German Shepherd in every one I have been to, even overseas.

Or you could try getting one from a LOCAL German Shepherd rescue.

Check out their guidelines (which include the adoption area) before filling the adoption applications out.
Papers now mean little to nothing I am sorry to say, questions to ask is about OFAs (http://www.offa.org/objectives.html) make sure the parents are well cared for, if you get to see there breeding facilities that will give you a good idea, do they insure there puppies? Do they have a contract? What did they do to socialize the puppies? What traits does the breeder consider most important when planning a litter? (In other words, Temperament? Health? Conformation? Trainability? Etc.)

dobiz- where I live petco has indepent rescue groups that you can adopt from, and petsmart goes through haven humane.

All the animals at petsmart during the day go back to haven humane at the end of the day.It is posted on the cage.
That price sends up a big red flag for me. If they can afford to sell puppies for $450 they are cutting corners somewhere. Likely with heath testing. DNA# only mean that the sire and dam have had DNA samples submitted to the AKC and nothing else. The breeder should be able to give you OFA numbers as well as other health test results which they apparently didn't. Hip dysplasia is still to big a problem in GSD (at least in the US) to get a puppy from untested parents (or parents with scores of less than good) it is just asking to have a puppy that is ultimatly crippled. Go to the GSD club website and see their breeder referal page to find reputable breeders of GSD
i wouldnt trust a 450 dog. thats just me. mine was 1800~and thats for a purebred 100% german lined pink papered Schh3 Kkl3 with a title of V3~

so i think that Gsd's arent that cheap. dogs may be AKC reg. but i doesnt mean theyre good quality!and yes, the parents are both Hip'A' and are OFA tested for Hip dysplasia!
I think we paid 600 for ours -- but I had to send away for the AKA registration (which I did receive). We bought from a private couple.

With the economy getting bad, prices are dropping. But 450 sounds cheap.

By the way, I had no proof of hip-testing or anything else. We just checked out the liter of puppies and picked the one that was male and seemed most freindly.
$450 is awful cheap for a decent GSD puppy
what are the hip OFA scores? cardio tests good? how long are the parents? what championships do they hold?

added petco and petsmart get their dogs from puppy mills.

hmm, so you mean that cute yorkie puppy i saw in the cage the other day is not from a puppy mill?

i know they have adoption days, but i also have seen dogs for sale at our local petsmart.
Sounds okay. It's great that you tried adopting... but what about adopting from the local shelter, or Petsmart or Petco (they mostly get their dogs from shelters)?
